The Executive Director runs a community as a business and a home at the same time. H2 Staffing recruits Executive Directors for senior living and post-acute organizations that need occupancy, compliance and resident experience held together by one capable leader.

What an Executive Director Actually Owns

The Executive Director carries full operational and financial responsibility for a community. Depending on the setting, that community might be assisted living, memory care, independent living, a continuing care retirement community, or a campus combining several of those.

The role owns the operating budget and margin, occupancy and the sales and move-in process that drives it, regulatory compliance under the rules that govern that community type in that state, hiring and retention across care, dining, housekeeping, maintenance and activities, resident and family satisfaction, and the physical plant. It also owns market presence, because referral relationships with hospitals, physicians, rehabilitation providers and community organizations are what keep the inquiry pipeline alive.

Why the Executive Director Seat Is Difficult to Fill

This role is a genuine hybrid, and that is what makes it scarce. Occupancy pressure means the Executive Director has to be comfortable owning a sales number, touring prospective residents and holding the sales team accountable. Compliance and care quality mean the same person has to be credible with clinical staff and regulators. Many strong candidates are clearly one or the other. Finding both in one person, in your market, at your compensation level, is the actual difficulty.

Licensure adds another layer, because requirements differ by state and by community type. An assisted living community in one state may require a specific administrator credential that a neighboring state does not, which changes who is genuinely eligible. Families are also present in this role in a way they are not in most leadership jobs, and an Executive Director who cannot handle a difficult family conversation at seven in the evening will not last regardless of their operating skill.

How We Recruit Executive Directors

  1. Define the community. We work through unit count, current occupancy and trend, care levels offered, payer mix, regulatory status, team structure and what this leader is being brought in to change.
  2. Identify and recruit. We approach Executive Directors and senior operators in your market directly, including those who are not looking.
  3. Verify and present. We confirm licensure where the role requires it and present candidates against both the operational and the occupancy side of the job.
  4. Support the selection. We stay involved through interviews, offer and start date.

Confidentiality

No candidate name or resume is submitted to an organization without the candidate permission, and replacing a sitting Executive Director is handled as a confidential search.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an Executive Director need an administrator license?

It depends on the state and the community type. We confirm what your specific community requires before we build a candidate list around it.

Do you recruit for memory care and assisted living specifically?

Yes, including campuses that combine independent living, assisted living and memory care.

How much does the sales side matter?

In most communities it matters a great deal. We ask you directly how much of this role is occupancy driven so we recruit against the real job.

Is this permanent placement?

Yes. Contract healthcare staffing for defined, ongoing assignments is a separate service.

How do we begin?

Send the community details through the search request form. Glen I. Henderson, MBA responds personally within one business day.
